There are currently 130 extant species with native and invasive ones found in the United States.
Nylanderia species form nests in leaf litter, acorns, soil and other places and have been known to form temporary nests in temporally isolated locations.
Generally reproductive are produced in late fall and overwinter and can be flying in the early warm days of spring and summer.
Nylanderia vividula Nylander FormicinaeNylander's crazy ant, is a small, light brown to reddish brown species thought to native to Mexico.
This species is well established in the US where it is an occasional nuisance pest.
In the southern United States, this species is often found nesting in disturbed, forested and urban environments.

Overall orangish-brown to bicolored with head and gaster lighter than mesosoma; coxae about the same color as mesosoma; legs often lighter in color than coxae; antennae organish brown.
Mesosoma somewhat slender, not robust; shiny; pubescence mostly absent escept for scattered setae on anterior portion of propodeum; promesonotal dorsum with several long, flexuous, erect macrochaetae; promesonotal dorsum slighly arched in lateral view; metanotal groove obvious; propodeum broadly rounded posteriorly, lacking spines; distinctly depressed below the level of the promesonotum.
Waist is single-segmented, petiolar node erect, tapering apically to a point, shiny.
Gaster often overhangs petiolar node; overall shiny, with dense appressed setae that do not dull appearance; numerous long, flexuous, erect setae; acidopore present the apex.

Workers of this species can be separated from the similar N.
Biology and Economic Importance Nylanderia vividula, generally considered to be a Nearctic species, is possibly the only Nylanderia species native to North America that has been collected in other regions.
Nylanderia vividula usually nests in relatively open, habitats such as roadsides, fields, pasture edges, нажмите чтобы узнать больше lawns, prairie remnants, open cedar forests, in and near agricultural fields, in open pine forest, in hardwood forests with relatively open understoryin glades, and coastal savannas.
In general, this species appears to thrive in somewhat disturbed habitats, and even in various structures.
Nests are typically in soil, leaf litter, acorns, and under rocks or other objects on the ground.
Reproductive adults overwinter in the nest and form mating swarms during hot, humid days in the spring and summer.
The Mississippi Entomological Museum has records of alate males and females from early April to August.
Nylanderia vividula is considered to be an occasional nuisance pest.
Because of its ability to nest in such a variety of habitats, it is not uncommon to find this species in buildings, especially in colder climates where it is too cold for them to survive outside.
